Perth is the main city and principal gateway for travellers wanting to experience the sights and sounds of Western Australia. Unlike the more developed east of the country, the attractions of Western Australia around Perth are principally natural, and include diverse landscapes, wildlife, beaches and much more besides.
Perth itself is a pretty city that lies on the Swan River, within easy reach of the coast. It offers visitors good shopping, nightlife, and a number of museums and galleries.
Just south of the city is the resort town of Fremantle, where you can surf, sunbathe, and even take part in scuba diving expeditions on a nearby coral reef.
Western Australia offers plenty of opportunities for touring by road, and amongst the sights within reach of Perth, some of the most popular include the dolphin sanctuary along the coast at Monkey Mia, the striking natural rock formations of the Bungle Bungles Mountains, and the stark beauty of the Kimberley Mountains where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and camping.
